Secondary school network and urban population in Hungary in 1910. Degrees of autonomy in school selection

The first part of the paper outlines the institutional modernisation of secondary education, and then describes the types and proportions of school selection and school careers by school in 1910-11. In the second part of the text, it analyses the variation in the co-occurrence of the 1910 secondary school network (5 types of schools) at the municipal level (local school network or school structure), comparing it with macro-level data on secondary school pathways, school choice, further education and career choice, and in specific (well-documented) cases, school-level data. The aim is to explore which typical schooling pathways are most likely to be realised in specific urban school networks.
