The role of the market in the professionalisation of Hungarian and German moving arts

The institutionalisation of the moving arts - dance, gymnastics and women's gymnastics, born at the turn of the century - and the development of their representatives into a professional community is an interesting example of the process by which an emancipatory movement, critical of modernisation and capitalism, is organised into a market for modern services and finds its place in the hierarchy of professions and vocations. By comparing German and Hungarian moving art, the paper seeks to answer questions such as what conflicts accompanied this integration, and how and by what characteristics the institution of the market influenced the process.
