Two high schools at the service of elite education in the 19th century
Part II

In the "long" 19th century, the traditional high school, the gymnasium, was the main channel of social advancement through learning, mainly through preparation and selection for higher education. To illustrate this, we present an analysis of two cities' high schools, one from the first half of the century (Győr) and the other from the end of the dualist era (Buda). In the first case, Győr, the role of the school in the education of the urban elite deserves attention. In the second case, that of the Buda school, the aim is to illustrate the role of the Buda elite in relation to the other Buda high schools. Both case studies are presented because of their social-historical methodology.
