Viktor Papp held an online lecture organized by the Collegium Hungaricum Wien

A doctoral student member of our research group, Viktor Papp, gave an online lecture organized by the Collegium Hungaricum Wien entitled "The "Procurator Nation". Who and why became a lawyer in 19th-century Hungary" on July 20. The lecture can be viewed by clicking here!

Here is a quote from the preview of the lecture:

In his lecture, Viktor Papp aims to help people find their way around by presenting some examples and processes, dispel misconceptions about the concepts, and shed new light on the history of the legal profession. Because that is essentially what he wants to talk about, that is, the social history of lawyers. Of course, as will become clear from the lecture and the presentation of historical trends, we cannot discuss the history of lawyers separately from that of lawyers.

Who and why did they become lawyers in Hungary in the long 19th century? What motivated them? Was there a common point in their interests, what visions did they have regarding the legal profession? Did they really leave the profession en masse in the hope of a well-paying public office? And in general: can we consider legal practice a profession, or was it still at the level of some kind of craft and occupation at that time? The presentation also aims to present a theory originating from the science of sociology and now widely spread in relation to lawyers, namely professionalization, the main question of which, in summary, is: when and why do certain occupations become professions?
