We have sad news...
We have received sad news from his family: Ibolya Váriné Szilágyi, a social psychologist, one of the outstanding representatives of Hungarian professions research, and mother of András Vári, an outstanding historian of professionalisation, who passed away ten years ago, has died at the age of ninety. The autobiography of Ibolya Váriné Szilágyi was published in the 1997 issue of Psychological Review (https://adtplus.arcanum.hu/hu/view/MTA_Pszichologia_17/?pg=339). "I have come to you again, this time for the last time. I see your shining eyes, I hear your questions, I feel that you are in life and life is in you. The road you have travelled has not been easy, but you were free and you have remained free. You set out with the new Hungarian life, which soon turned away from the path you had longed for, the path you had promised, but you stubbornly persevered, never giving up the goals of the bright winds of youth. You were a great, original thinker who etched your name forever in the history of Hungarian social psychology. You were able to combine Russian, European and American ideas, you used creative research methods. Both Mead and Vigotsky would have been proud of you. You have boldly ventured into the labyrinth of social psychological knowledge, where you have found the most beautiful and difficult questions that the greatest have sought and continue to seek answers to. Your work on values is a classic, and has a place among the most important books written by Hungarian social psychologists.
You have lived a long and productive life, during which you have not been broken by adversity. You, who searched for the value of justice, have suffered countless injustices, to which you have responded with a head held high and with dignity. Never looking back, always looking forward. You lived courageously, uncompromisingly, with eyes open, curious.
Now you are where the fragmented ends, and you see not only in a mirror, dimly, but colour by colour, where tongues are silenced, science is lost. But your life is not over, your works keep you, the young people who follow in your footsteps learn from you. You have become a member of the eternal academy, where one giant cries to another across the barren halls of time, where the din of foolish dwarves is not heard, where the conversation of great minds is uninterrupted.
It remains, for faith, hope and the greatest of all, love, are indestructible. You have loved many, and many have loved you. As long as we live, the love we feel, that keeps us going, will not fade. As the Apostle Paul writes, "Love is patient, kind, not jealous, not boastful, not haughty. It does not provoke to anger or reproach evil. It does not rejoice in evil, but rejoices with righteousness. He hopes all things, endures all things."
I do not say goodbye, for though you have passed into the other, invisible world, you are here among us. You have become part of the unbroken chain of life that links the no longer living with the now and the hereafter. On behalf of all of us who are here, could be here, but are no longer here, thank you for having been with us."
